Become a Friend
There are many creative new ways in which our Community is responding to the pressing spiritual needs of our time. To serve those needs, we have developed a set of teaching and outreach priorities for the coming year, which many volunteers and a very few full-time individuals work very hard to realize. While our mission is substantial, our financial needs are relatively modest. We nevertheless have financial commitments for which a stable annual income is crucial. That is why I am inviting you to join more fully in this spiritual family we call the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM) by becoming a Friend. Your annual support gives us both inspiration and practical support every day, here in the US and around the world. Laurence Freeman OSB
One of the seminal moments in the rebirth of Christian contemplative prayer in the US and the world took place in November of 1976 when Father John Main introduced his essential teaching to the monks of Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky. The transcripts of that introduction, of course, became the still powerfully lucid, Gethsemani Talks, Fr. John’s first published teaching.
More than 36 years later, WCCM in the US thrives. There are now more than 250 established groups, an active School for Teachers, and a compelling calendar of regional and national events. We are also the home of the John Main Center for Meditation and Inter-religious Dialogue at Georgetown University, as well as several other resource centers around the US listed here. And you are now enjoying the newly designed website for the US, which provides contact information for all US meditation groups and events, as well as key links to international resources.
And thanks to the ongoing annual giving of Friends, The US Community is also able to provide essential financial contributions each year to the WCCM International Office (IO) in London. That office plans and supports Fr. Laurence’s extensive annual calendar of retreats and talks, and in particular makes possible his presence in emerging and disadvantaged countries around the world. The IO also operates Meditatio, the community’s outreach to the secular world, as well as produces the international newsletter and website, www.wccm.org, that serves all five continents and more than 100 countries.
WCCM is a remarkable community. The cost of its many services is far outstripped by the bountiful benefits it makes possible, thanks to the Spirit and the hard work of many around the world. But that cost must be met. And the Friends program is designed to do just that. A Friend provides at least one gift each year to WCCM, and no gift is too small. Please consider becoming a WCCM Friend and help the work of the community both throughout the US and the world. If you are already a Friend, please remain with us.
Your financial support is greatly needed and much appreciated, and you can be assured that every cent of your gift will go to advancing the mission of the Community, here in the US and around the world. No gift is too small. The US played a singular role in the creation of the World Community. Please help us play a singular role in its continued flourishing.
